Ambler's Holiday Calendar Runs Past Three Butler Avenue Addresses That Changed This Year

October 22, 2026

Ambler's holiday season follows the same rhythm it always has. The farmers market wraps up, the Ambler Theater runs its $5 morning matinees, and a parade comes down Butler Avenue on the first Saturday of December. Three addresses along that route have changed in 2026. The 1893 hotel at 34 East Butler has a new restaurant and a cocktail bar upstairs. Dettera's long-running room at 129 East Butler is waiting on a new tenant. Sorrentino's pasta counter at 91 East Butler is gone, but the pasta is still sold. If you plan your holiday evenings from memory, at least two of those stops will surprise you.

Three Addresses, Then and Now

Address Last holiday season This holiday season
34 E. Butler Ave. Gypsy Blu Porter downstairs, Gaslight Lounge upstairs
129 E. Butler Ave. Dettera Restaurant & Wine Bar Luna, from FineLine Hospitality, announced for fall
91 E. Butler Ave. Sorrentino Pasta & Provisions Storefront closed; pasta sold wholesale and through local retailers

Each change happened differently. The hotel got a new owner with a plan already in place. The Dettera room closed in spring and has a named successor. Sorrentino closed its storefront to put its time into a growing wholesale business, so the pasta left Butler Avenue and stayed in the area.

The Old Hotel Kept Its Upstairs

Early in 2026, hospitality veteran Barry Caplan bought Gypsy Blu, and WhatNow Philadelphia reported that he planned to turn it into two concepts. Porter is an American restaurant on the ground floor of the former Wyndham Hotel. Gaslight is a cocktail bar on the second floor. His partners are CFO Benjamin Hur and executive chef Brian Thress. WhatNow described a menu that carries on Gypsy Blu's upscale American approach, with shrimp cocktail, roasted duck breast and linguine vongole, in a room decorated with vintage suitcases and leather accents.

The name comes from the building's history. Porter's own site says it refers to the hotel porters who carried suitcases upstairs for travelers arriving by train. It also places the restaurant inside the building's "historic 1893 setting." According to the site, the Gaslight Lounge upstairs offers "a darker, more intimate experience," with classic cocktails, aimed at either the start of an evening or the end of dinner downstairs. The restaurant has been seating guests since at least August, based on diner reviews from that month.

That two-floor layout matters in December. A parade afternoon or a 7 p.m. sing-along at the theater can now end with a drink upstairs at the same address, a block from the station.

Caplan also bought the building next door at 38 East Butler, home of El Limon. Around Ambler reported that the taqueria would continue under its existing ownership. El Limon's locations page still lists 38 E. Butler Ave. The property changed hands, but the taco counter people know is still there.

129 East Butler Is Waiting on Luna

Farther east, the change took longer. Wiss Now reported in April that Dettera Restaurant & Wine Bar had served its final customers after about 16 years on Butler Avenue.

The next tenant has a name and a menu concept. In its fall restaurant forecast, published September 9, The Philadelphia Inquirer listed Luna at 129 E. Butler Ave. It's a "stylish revamp of Dettera" by FineLine Hospitality, the group that recently opened Academy Grill in Fort Washington. Chef Marie Lavizzo-Mourey plans to build the menu around the 20-plus countries that border the Mediterranean. The Inquirer said the project was "on track for fall."

For now, the eastern end of downtown has an address that's announced but not yet open, in the middle of the busiest walking weeks of the year. Before you plan a December dinner around Luna, check that it has opened. Until then, the old Dettera room stays on the holiday route as a work in progress.

Sorrentino's Pasta Moved Onto Other Shelves

Sorrentino Pasta & Provisions opened in 2021 on Butler Avenue near Ridge, next to Alice Bakery. In one narrow storefront, it ran a pasta workshop, an Italian specialty market and about 15 restaurant seats under a blackboard menu. Ambler Main Street's news site, Around Ambler, reported that the storefront would close August 30.

The Inquirer's September profile explains why. Wholesale had been the business's mainstay for three years, especially after owner Rich Sorrentino turned a small garage on a nearby side street into a production facility that supplies local restaurants and country clubs. "I can't be in two places at once," he told the Inquirer, describing his choice between the restaurant and the wholesale operation. Montco Today noted that he is planning a small retail shop nearby, with no opening date set.

So the pasta is still made in Ambler. You just buy it somewhere else now. Holiday tables can still be stocked from these places:

  • Weavers Way, which carries Sorrentino-made private-label ravioli and gnocchi and has an Ambler store
  • Sam's Italian Market in Willow Grove
  • Skippack Italian Market
  • Dave's Backyard Farm in Huntingdon Valley
  • Horsham Farmers' Market, plus rotating farmers markets in Conshohocken and East Falls

Sorrentino's own where-to-buy page lists more regional retail accounts and is the place to check before a special trip.

For a daytime stop on the same stretch, Copihue Bakehouse is a newer anchor. Wiss Now profiled the Chilean bakery's sweet and savory menu this month, a year after it opened on Butler Avenue.

The Dates That Did Not Move

The calendar is where all three addresses come into play. Most of Ambler's season falls on three weekends, and each one now passes a different version of Butler Avenue than it did a year ago.

  1. Saturday, October 31. The Ambler Farmers Market at Butler and Maple holds its final scheduled Saturday of the season. That night at 9:45, the Ambler Theater screens Halloween from 1978.
  2. Saturday, November 7. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory plays as a $5 Family Matinee at 10 a.m.
  3. November 27 to 29. Ambler Main Street lists Black Friday shopping November 27 and 28 and Small Business Saturday November 28 and 29. The theater's 10 a.m. family matinees fall on the same days: Elf on November 27 and 29 and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer on November 28.
  4. Wednesday, December 2. White Christmas: Sing-A-Long at 7 p.m.
  5. December 5 and 6. The Muppet Christmas Carol runs at 10 a.m. both mornings. The Ambler Holiday Parade marches down Butler Avenue on Saturday, December 5. Ambler Main Street's homepage lists 1 p.m., but its calendar shows a later time, so check with the organizers before you claim a curb spot.
  6. Wednesday, December 9. The Ambler Symphony Holiday Sing-A-Long comes to the theater at 7 p.m. The theater says this year's program is a concert and sing-along without a film.
  7. December 11 to 14. Ambler Main Street lists a Holiday Shopping Weekend for those four days and "Santa Arrives by Train" on December 11. The Polar Express plays at 10 a.m. on December 12 and 13 and returns at 10 a.m. on December 24.

Every one of these events is within a few blocks of the three changed addresses. The parade route runs past the old hotel. Evening sing-alongs let out a short walk from Gaslight's stairs. The Polar Express mornings fall during the stretch when 129 East Butler is most likely to be either newly open as Luna or still in build-out. The Ambler Theater's own DiCrescenzo Gallery at 106 E. Butler Ave. was also slated to reopen after renovations this fall, which would give that block one more door to try.

At Holly Reynolds, we track storefront changes on Butler Avenue the same way we track sales, because both shape how Ambler looks to the next buyer walking from the station.
